Project

Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC (“Sabal Trail”) is in the early assessment stage of further developing its existing interstate natural gas pipeline system in the Southeast. This proposed project is intended to increase and diversify transportation capacity to reliably deliver natural gas to power-generating companies, local distribution companies and other end users.

The proposed project consists of two major segments*:

  • An “Expansion” of the existing pipeline from Alexander City, AL to Reunion, FL installing additional horsepower at new and existing compressor station facilities and constructing new pipeline along or near the existing pipeline route.

  • An “Extension” of the existing Sabal Trail pipeline from Alexander City, AL moving westward to connect with existing major pipelines in Mississippi. This Extension would also enable the efficient delivery of natural gas to potential customers along the pipeline route in Alabama.

* Ultimately, the full scope of the project will be finalized once all customer commitments are received.

Purpose and benefits

The primary objectives of this project are to:

  • Meet the growing energy demand driven by population growth and economic development in the regions served by the existing Sabal Trail system.
  • Provide firm transportation service to new high-volume customers seeking affordable and reliable natural gas supply.
  • Enhance overall system flexibility and reliability for all existing customers.
  • Continue delivering an essential, low-emission energy source that supports energy affordability, grid stability and economic growth.

Next steps

Sabal Trail will continue to develop a route and project scope by engaging with landowners, public officials and local communities, providing numerous opportunities for public input.

Additional details, including preliminary route maps and anticipated project timelines, will be shared on our project website and made available at public meetings in the coming months.

Our commitment to safety and community engagement

Sabal Trail is committed to developing and constructing projects in a safe, environmentally responsible manner. Throughout this process, we will maintain open, ongoing communication with landowners, community members and other stakeholders who may be affected by the proposed project.

We recognize that projects evolve over time and benefit from ongoing feedback. While we will be reaching out to stakeholders directly, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Anticipated project timeline

Project planning and public outreach are now underway. We expect to engage directly with landowners and conduct field surveys in the summer of 2026. Once survey work begins and the proposed pipeline route is refined, we will engage federal and state agencies to initiate permitting. Throughout this process, there will be numerous opportunities for the public to participate, review information and provide their input. Once all approvals are received, we plan to start construction in the second quarter of 2029.
